About Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe)
Da Hong Pao, meaning “Big Red Robe,” is arguably the most famous rock tea from Wuyi Mountain. Legend tells of Ming Dynasty scholars who were healed by tea from the original Da Hong Pao mother bushes, leading them to drape their red robes over the plants in gratitude. While tea from the original mother bushes is no longer available commercially, authentic Da Hong Pao is still produced from cuttings of those original plants, carrying forward their distinctive character.
Wuyi Mountain Rock Tea Terroir
Grown in the mineral-rich, rocky soil of Wuyi Mountain’s cliffs, this tea develops its unique “Yan Yun” (rock rhyme) character. The combination of volcanic soil, misty climate, and careful traditional processing creates a tea with:
• Mineral Complexity: Distinct rocky, mineral undertones
• Roasted Notes: Traditional charcoal roasting brings out warm, toasty flavors
• Full Body: Rich texture and substantial mouthfeel
• Long Finish: Lingering sweetness and aroma that develops over multiple infusions
Tasting Profile
• Dry Leaf: Dark, tightly twisted strips with reddish edges and occasional golden tips
• Liquor: Deep amber to reddish-brown, clear and bright
• Aroma: Roasted notes with hints of caramel, dark chocolate, and mineral scent
• Flavor: Rich and full-bodied with layers of roasted nuts, dried fruit, and distinctive mineral notes
• Mouthfeel: Smooth and velvety with good viscosity
• Aftertaste: Long-lasting “rock rhyme” with sweet, mineral finish
