Blue and White Tea Set: Awaken Your Senses with the Lion’s Dance
Welcome to a world where art, ceremony, and symbolism converge in a single, serene ritual. This blue and white tea set is more than a collection of vessels; it is a dynamic canvas that tells a story of power, protection, and joy. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant Chinese Lion Dance—a centuries-old performance believed to ward off evil and summon good fortune—each piece in this 5-part collection is adorned with hand-painted cobalt blue lions amidst swirling clouds and the elegant “Yingluo” (treasure necklace) pattern. Meticulously crafted by the master artisans of Banling Kiln, a brand celebrated for its artistry and recognized by CCTV, this set brings the energy of a festival and the depth of heritage directly to your tea table. It is designed for those who seek not just to drink tea, but to perform it—to engage in a mindful practice that is as visually captivating as it is flavorful.
At Junxistea, we bridge the timeless with the functional. This blue and white tea set is centered around an ingeniously designed 180ml “Er Cai Gaiwan” (二才盖碗). Unlike traditional lids, its unique “floating” design allows it to rotate smoothly, offering unparalleled control over steeping and a burn-resistant, comfortable grip—a perfect fusion of ancient form and modern ergonomics. The set is completed with a harmonious tea boat (壶承), a dedicated master cup, two guest cups, and coordinating cup pads, ensuring a complete Gaiwan set experience ready for personal meditation or gracious hosting. Housed in a striking orange gift box that symbolizes happiness and prosperity, this tea set with gift box is an immediate heirloom, ready to be unveiled and cherished.
The Story in the Glaze: The Lion’s Protective Gaze
The soul of this blue and white tea set is painted in cobalt, a narrative that stretches back to the Ming Dynasty. The “Lion Dance” (醒狮) is not merely a decorative motif; it is a character brimming with meaning. In Chinese culture, the lion is a mythical guardian, a symbol of majesty, courage, and protection. The dance itself, performed during Lunar New Year and important celebrations, is believed to chase away negative spirits and usher in luck and abundance.
Our artisans at Banling Kiln capture this lively spirit on porcelain. Using fine brushes and traditional underglaze cobalt pigment, they first outline the powerful, playful forms of the lions—their manes flowing like fire, their eyes bright with expression. Surrounding them are the “Yingluo” patterns, inspired by the ornate jeweled necklaces of Buddhist deities, symbolizing sacred connection and wealth. The backgrounds are filled with classic cloud and ruyi (wish-granting) motifs. After painting, each piece is coated in a clear glaze and fired at over 1300°C. This high-temperature vitrification permanently fuses the design into the ceramic, resulting in the brilliant, glass-like finish and ensuring the colors will never fade. This lion dance tea set thus becomes a permanent guardian of your tea space, a daily reminder to brew with courage and savor with joy. The contrast of the vibrant blue against the pure white porcelain is a hallmark of Jingdezhen craftsmanship, making this a true piece of Chinese ceramic tea set art.
Why This Set Transforms Your Tea Practice
1. Unrivaled Artistic Heritage: As a CCTV-recommended piece from Banling Kiln, this set carries a mark of quality and cultural authenticity. The hand-painting ensures each piece is unique, a far cry from mass-produced decals.
2. Innovative Functional Design: The star of this complete Gaiwan set is the 180ml Gaiwan with its rotating “floating lid.” This design prevents steam burns, allows for precise control over infusion strength, and adds a delightful tactile element to the brewing ritual.
3. Complete Ceremonial Harmony: Every component is designed to work together. The tea boat neatly contains the ceremony, the cups are sized for concentrated tasting, and the pads protect your surface. It’s a tea set with gift box that requires no additional searching.
4. A Bridge to Culture & Mindfulness: Using this set naturally cultivates presence. The act of following the lion’s dance across the porcelain, of handling the floating lid, turns brewing into a moving meditation—a practice in focus and cultural appreciation.
Your 5-Piece Ceremony: The Components Unveiled
• Floating Lid Gaiwan (盖碗, 180ml): The heart of the set. The 9.0cm wide, 7.5cm high bowl with its unique rotating lid is perfect for brewing all tea types. Its 180ml capacity is ideal for 1-3 people.
• Tea Boat /壶承 (17.8cm): The sturdy 17.8cm wide base tray. It catches spills, contains the heat, and grounds your entire tea setup with elegance.
• Master Cup (主人杯, 50ml): A larger (6.8cm) cup for the host, allowing for deeper aroma appreciation.
• Guest Cups (客杯, 30ml x2): Two smaller (5.9cm) cups for serving guests, perfect for the small, flavorful pours of Gongfu tea.
• Cup Pads (杯垫): Protect your table and complete the presentation, each measuring 8.0cm.
Begin Your Awakened Brew: A Simple Guide
1. The Warm Welcome: Rinse your entire blue and white tea set with hot water. This cleanses and brings all pieces to the ideal temperature.
2. The Leaf Awakens: Place tea leaves in the Gaiwan (about 1/3 full). Add hot water, rotate the lid slightly, and immediately pour out. This “awakens” the leaves.
3. The Lion’s Brew: Refill the Gaiwan with water at the correct temperature. Steep for 10-30 seconds, then use the lid to hold back the leaves as you pour the tea into the Gongdao cup or directly into the cups.
4. Savor the Fortune: Inhale the aroma rising from your lion dance tea set cups. Take a small sip, letting the flavors unfold on your palate.
5. Repeat the Dance: Re-steep the same leaves many times, increasing the steep time slightly with each infusion. A great Chinese ceramic tea set like this reveals evolving flavors, just like a dynamic performance.
